Mashiko Ash-Glazed Jomon Guinomi by Shimaoka Tatsuzo
Here is a prized firing style from Living National Treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo's (1919-2007) kiln; an ash-glazed Jomon guinomi-sake cup. This style only comes from a very limited area in the kiln and only a few smaller pieces are fired in any one kiln. This Shimaoka guinomi has wonderful natural ash glazing on the front and also within where the ash drips into the pool; it's all nicely contrasted and balanced by the dark orange-rusty 'clay flavor.' Overall in form the piece is very nice to hold and is balanced by the middle domo-himo raised band. In perfect condition with a signed box, 6.4cm.tallx7.2, stamped on base and dating to 1974. EMS included.
