Floral Design 'Vase' by Kawai Kanjiro
Kawai Kanjiro's(1890-1966) work stands out amongst the long history of Japanese ceramics as made by a true genius. His mastery of glazes, brave new designs, and mystic-like brushwork put him up there with Chojiro, Kenzan, and Itaya in ceramic legends. Kawai was a truly special artist that comes along only 'once every five-hundred years.' This late 1930s-early 1940s work comes from a private collection and still has a sticker on the base that reads 'Kanjiro Kawai, 1952.' It has his animated brush work on the slightly crackled glazed body. The base shows a kaki-persimmon glaze as well as the whole of the interior. A museum piece in perfect condition, 22.4cm.tallx18.9x11.1. There is no box, yet one can be signed by Robert or we can have the Kawai Museum in Kyoto sign a box, that would take about a month to do and incur a cost of 50,000 yen; that is the amount they charge. A retrospective Kawai exhibition is touring Japan now celebrating his birth 120 years ago.
