Nezumi-Shino Chawan by Hori Ichiro
Beyond a shadow of a doubt one of today most important Mino potters is Hori Ichiro (b.1952). He makes some of the finest Shino, Nezumi-Shino, Setoguro (Black Seto) and Ki-Seto (Yellow Seto) in Japan today, period. Hori is a mago-deshi or 'grandchild apprentice' to the great past Living National Treasure Arakawa Toyozo(1894-1985), as Hori studied with Kato Kozo (current Living National Treasure for Setoguro), Arakawa's apprentice way back when. There is something pure about Hori that comes through in his work, especially his throwing on the wheel as he listens to Schubert and other classical music in his mountain studio. This Nezumi-Shino, as with all of Hori's works, has a life of its own, every apsect is alive from the form, glazing and foot; as Lao Tzu once said some years ago 'there is no real beauty without character' and Hori has a deep 'character' in spades. This chawan is 9.5cm.tallx12, in perfect condition with a signed box.
