Karatsu-Nanban Bamboo Vase by Nakazato Takashi
In the fall of 2000 Karatsu potter Nakazato Takashi(1937-) had an exhibition at the Denver Museum- a very rare event for a living Japanese ceramic artist. Yet Nakazato has never been interested in the norm and found his own way far from the place of his birth in Karatsu. He left behind his families thirteen generation potting tradition( his father was Living National Treasure Muan) to learn about the ancient wares on Tanegashima island. That's where, with the late scholar-potter Koyama Fujio, he studied the nanban high-fired unglazed stoneware style. He did return to Karatsu in 1974 to establish his kiln and nows calls the style he made famous Karatsu Nanban. That's the hakogaki on this piece along with take or bamboo, as it's in the form of cut bamboo. It is a shibui piece with natural ash glazing. In perfect condition with a signed box, dates about 30 years back, 20.5cm.tallx16cm. at base, signed on base.
