Yohen Jomon-Zogan Tsubo by Shimaoka Tatsuzo
Of all the various styles that past Living National Treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo(1919-2007) fired his most prized and thus most expensive were his yohen--kiln changes--works. The reason is of course the rarity of the works from any single kiln firing where such pieces were placed in very limited prime spots in the kiln, and also the success rate of such works was low. This circa 1995 work is such a yohen jar with a very rare form, I've searched the umpteen exhibition catalogs and books I have on Shimaoka and have only found similar ones, no perfect match as one would find on say a molded bottle form. Shimaoka must have made this for a top exhibition piece, from the banded shoulder to the swelling form to the strong base the work is a prime example of his pottery. The Jomon-zogan inlaid rope lines are deep and often filled with fly-ash from the kiln, on the back there are areas of warm zogan 'clay flavor' only. A museum piece in perfect condition with a signed box, stamped on base, 28.5cm.tallx19. Will also come with a past exhibition catalog including price list.
