Mashiko Yohen-Jomon Tokkuri by Shimaoka Tatsuzo
On my desk as I write this is a price list for a 2004 Shimaoka Tatsuzo(1919-2007) exhibition where it shows tokkuri ranging in price from 160,000 yen to 525,000 yen; that's quite a wide gap and the reason is rarity of firing. This means the higher top priced ones Shimaoka was only able to get one, maybe two if lucky, from any one firing, and the top priced tokkuri are always his yohen-jomon-zogan,like the one offered here. Shimaoka's works, as you all know, are in museum and private collections the world over. I see some works that move me, and then again, many that don't. This tokkuri I went over the cliff for; surely one of his finest ever and it dates to 1974 with his henko form I adore and a firing to die for. How the ash glaze flows over the shoulder and stops in that glassy bead is breathtaking and the rich orange clay tones top it off. An extremely rare piece in perfect condition with a signed box, stamped on side, paper inside showing history has a small intro written by Hamada Shoji, Japanese only.
