Black Seto Chawan by Yamada Kazu
Yamada Kazu's Setoguro (Black Seto) is simply at the top of the brief list of worthy Setoguro potters in Japan today; his Setoguro is now on display at the National Museum of Modern Art, Crafts Gallery current Tea exhibition. Not many at all get the depth and richness of Setoguro as Yamada, with tones varying from matte to a reflective shine and textures from smooth to reptilian. The chawan has a heavily faceted-textured exterior that contrasts with the quieter smooth interior. Patches of clay are seen on the outside and nowhere to be found inside; a well-thought out study in contrasts on a magnificent chawan. It's 9.5cm.tallx12x11.2, in perfect condition with a signed box.
