Shinsha Guinomi by Fujihira Shin
One of Japan's most unique and prolific ceramic artists is Kyoto's Fujihira Shin(1922-2012). He has essayed some of the most charming, intriguing, and of 'another world' ceramic pieces during his long career. He's been honored with museum retrospective exhibitions at Musee Tomo in Tokyo (Robert has an article in today's (9/3) Japan Times on the current Musee Tomoo exhibition, can be viewed online) and Paramita in Mie museums. His honors and exhibitions are too long to list here, suffice to say he is a major, eclectic ceramic artist. More about him and also past exhibition slide shows can be viewed at e-yakimono.net One glaze specialty he does is called shinsha, a copper red glaze and I must say in Japan today he is the finest shinsha potter in the land, period. Of course on this elegant guinomi we also see shades of blue due to atmospheric changes in the kiln; the glaze overall is lightly crackled; dating to 1996, in perfect condition with a signed box, 4.5cm.tallx7.1, stamped on base.
