Sutra Container-Vase
Anagama-master potter Yoshisuji Keiji creates many works based on Buddhist art. This is a sutra container with a thick ash and natural glassy ash glaze based on ancient bronze sutra containers. Numerous sutra mounds were built throughout Japan to bury sutras (Buddhist scriptures) from the latter half of the Heian (794-1185) to Kamakura (1185-1333) period. Drawing on that period in time Yoshisuji created this sutra container that is a meditative work that can also be used for flowers. Inside the lid a superficial firing crack was mended with gold giving the work an extra aura of divinity. This piece was also featured in a column I wrote for a past issue of a Japanese ceramic art magazine, of which a copy will be sent. In perfect condition with a signed box, 24.5cm.tall with lid on, lid is 14.5cm.wide, base is 10.5cm.wide, signed on base. Yoshisuji recently had a very successful exhibition in Shizuoka.
