Tall Celadon Koro-Sculpture by Uraguchi Masayuki
Uraguchi Masayuki (b.1964) is one of very few--very few--celadon artists of extreme talent here in Japan. Having studied under the late Living National Treasure Miura Koheiji (1933-2006), Uraguchi's works not only exhibit a sharp sense of form, his many experiments in glazes have produced new and unique celadon glazes that are authentically Uraguchi's. We may add he's the only celadon apprentice that Miura has had and acknowledged. Miruji, Kokusho, Kokuyosai are names for his original Seiji/celadon and are propelling the art of celadon into new heights, as seen on this tall lidded koro-incense burner-sculpture. It posses a religious aura as if used in some ancient ceremony; the form is pure Uraguchi--and technically perfect--while the deep turquoise crackled glazing is divine, a clay jewel. In perfect condition with a signed box, 32.8cm.tallx25cm.wide at lid, signed on base.
