Large Jar by Uchida Koichi
Uchida Koichi(b.1969) is one of today's 'buzz potters' here in Japan. At a past exhibition in Odawara, folks were reaching over shoulders to grab works in the first few mad minutes. His works have been seen at many solo, group and museum exhibitions here in Japan, particularly the Paramita Museum where they have many of his large jars. In a past issue of TOHSETSU--the journal for the Japan Ceramic Society--his name was mentioned as a candidate for the JCS Prize; he didn't get it this time around yet no doubt in time he will. He works in many styles and *whatever* he does he does it well. This large white textured tsubo is a masterpiece of his in form and they way it defines space; a sphere that is hard to take ones eyes off of. A museum piece, large at 50cm.x50 and heavy too at about 25 kilos; wonderful, wonderful jar.
