Bizen-Sue Tall Guinomi by Yoshimoto Shuho
Veteran Bizen potter Yoshimoto Shuho(b.1938) looks back to the fifth through twelfth centuries for his inspiration. That's when the Sueki tradition was introduced from Korea using an anagama. More about sueki on e-yakimono.net Yoshimoto is the only potter in Bizen (out of 500 or so) who makes Bizen-Sue and he is a consummate potter with a great spirit in an austere, Shinto spirit. This takatsuki-tall sake cup is remnant of ceremonial vessels used at shrines long ago; it has a rich natural ash-glazing that is beautiful inside as well as all around the outer body. It stands 10cm.tallx8.3cm.at lip, two kiln chips on base--not visible--where the glaze adhered to the kiln shelf--signed on base with a signed box.
