Shigaraki Wa-Ring 'Jar' by Kato Takahiko
Lao Tzu, ‘pots are made of clay, but the hollow space in them makes the essence of the pot.’ From the sixth century B.C. some truths never change; Kato Takahiko understands that as he continually creates new and innovative Shigaraki works, the man is obsessed. Drawing on Lao Tzu's wisdom, Kato has created a recent wa or ring series and here is a work from that, fired recently. It has scales that one man said looked like a dinosaur when I was outside taking photos. I found a small flower on the grass and placed it inside the small opening as seen in a few photos. What is framed by the empty space becomes part of the piece itself. A really neat work, in perfect condition with a signed box, 32.cm.tallx35.5x10, signed on base; oh, forgot to mention the firing is superb as well.
