Tokkuri / Bizen
Ko-Bizen Bamboo Tokkuri-Vase
In the old days--meaning over 250 years ago, at least--tokkuri tended to be on the larger side, over 20cm.tall. For storage purposes was one reason and also for serving a party. Here is a fine example of that in a bamboo motif Ko-Bizen tokkuri dating to the 18th century. During the firing the intense heat warped the mouth giving it added character. Another piece fused on the shoulder and remnants can be seen, in Japanese called hitsuki. On the other side of the shoulder a small, very old nick is seen, also added character, a battle scar of sorts. Fantastic dark 'clay flavor' lined and embellished with hints of goma and dark red hidasuki. Old kiln mark on base. In perfect condition, 24.5cm.tallx14, with an unsigned newer box.
