Bizen Pagoda Koro by Urakami Zenji
When one gets off the train at Imbe (the station for Bizen) and looks at the station building a fine shishi relief is to be seen; a picture of it can be viewed here here e-yakimono.net/html/bizen-town.html It was made by celebrated Bizen potter Urakami Zenji(1914-2006). He studied with the great Bizen sculptor-potter Nishimura Shunko(1886-1953) and had a very successful career being named an Okayama Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property in 1973. His works are truly in a class by themselves and Urakami was one of the last great Bizen sculptor ceramic artists. This can be seen in this beautiful pagoda incense burner; the pagoda lid comes off and inside ash can be placed to burn, it has never been used. The firing is excellent with a nice covering of goma and rich 'clay flavor.' In perfect condition with a signed box, 26cm.tallx23.7x15.1, signed on base. Also seen is a similar work from a major Urakami retrospective book.
