Chawan / Seto
15th Century Muromachi Seto Ash-Glazed Chawan
From a private collection, here is a 15th-century Muromachi period Seto open-faced ash-glazed chawan. The wide open-faced form has had many restorations over the centuries, some in the yobitsugi grafting style; looking at the kodai we see the influence of Chinese tenmoku chawan. It is a very superb example and oh the stories it could tell.....6.5-8cm.tallx17-17.5; box to be made if required and signed in Japanese by the collector. Attached also are similar works in major books from Yellin's library.
