Miwa Kyusetsu X (1895-1981), later known as Kyuwa, was the first Living National Treasure of Hagi -the second was his younger brother Miwa Kyusetsu XI (the present-day Jusetsu). Quite simply, he did what LNT Kaneshige Toyo did for Bizen, or what LNT Nakazato Muan did for Karatsu. He is a legendary figure, and reinvigorated the kiln site with elegant and contemplative Hagi teawares. He was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (IICP, or Living National Treasure) in 1970, the same year as Fujiwara Kei. Here is an elegant and dignified Miwa Hagi that exemplifies the serene, subtle, and deeply contemplative nature of Kyusetsu's work. The white Hagi glaze is like pristine snow or waves lapping over Hagi's sandy shore, and the kiln-effect sunset-color fawn spots, containing burnt oranges near the base, are a highly treasured landscape on tea wares. This work was made before Kyusetsu changed his name to Kyuwa sometime in the late 1950s-early 1960s. It's 27cm tall, comes with a signed box, stamped on base, in perfect condition.
