Bizen Henko-Jar by Mori Togaku
In 1990 Mori Togaku held an exhibition of recent works at Tenmaya in Fukuyama and in the catalog---photo here--is a sister piece to the Mori henko offered here; from what he told me only ten were made. It was fired in his 53 meter anagama and recalls the influence of his meetings with Kamoda Shoji; the two, along with Ezaki Issei, held now legendary three-person exhibitions in Tokyo in the late 60s. This is a major work in a smaller form by one of the most important Bizen ceramic artists of all time. Not only is the form totally unique for Bizen, so is the light dusting of goma and that all-so-special 'clay flavor' that only Mori can get from his o-gama large kiln. A work from this same period is now in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. With a signed box, in excellent condition, 21cm.tallx18, stamped on base.
