Shino Chawan by Kato Seizo (Kagekiyo)
This muji-Shino chawan was made by the late 13th generation Mino potter Kato Kagekiyo (1930-1979, Seizo). Kato was one of finest Mino potters after the first generation of Showa greats, such as Kato Tokuro and Arakawa Toyozo. In the 1973 book called 'Kama-betsu, Gendai no Tougei' (Individual kilns, Contemporary Pottery) by the late Kuroda Ryoji he wrote that seven potters were the upcoming stars of Mino. Along with Kato were Hayashi Kotaro (1940-1981), Suzuki Osamu(current Shino Living National Treasure), Matsuyama Suketoshi(Kanzaki Shiho's teacher), Kato Kozo, Tamaoki Yasuo, Ando Hidetaka, and Okuiso Eiroku(1930-1987). Kato, and his young-superstar son Yasukage, have some of the strongest kodai and rich Shino glazes in all of Mino. This chawan has a full form and a soft classic muji-'plain' Shino glaze with touches of hi-iro 'fire color.' The 'pool' is deep and from Kato's experience he formed it perfectly to highlight matcha in the way it spreads out; the emerald color of matcha will also compliment the Shino hue. In perfect condition with a signed box, 9.5cm.tallx13, signed on base.
