Tokkuri / Ito Sekisui
Mumyoi Tokkuri by Ito Sekisui
On the cover of the 'Modern Japanese Cermaics in American Collections' catalog (Japan Society, 1993) is a photo of a large jar by Ito Sekisui(b.1941). It is a rough-textured piece but shares the same red-charcoal black firing tones as seen on this ripe tokkuri. Ito became the fifth Sekisui in 1977--and was designated a Living National Treasure in 2003 for his mumyoi pottery--and his family started potting on Sado Island in the 17th century. They use a local red clay and thus the color of the wares. Here is a full-ripe rounded tokkuri in a classic Ito mumyoi firing. In perfect condition with a signed box, 11.6cm.tallx10.5, signed on base.
