Mashiko Jar by Murata Gen
Murata Gen(1904-1988) was one of the greatest Mingei potters of the 20th century. His pots have all that is good in mingei; he was awarded many prizes including that of the Tochigi Prefectural Culture Prize in 1985. By a stroke of luck I was able to acquire four pieces from a private collection. This faceted tsubo-jar has the most overlapping glaze facade of the three tsubo and with every turn a new impressionistic 'landscape' comes into view; he was just so good. In excellent condition--there is a small firing crack on the base--with a signed box, 21.5cm.tallx18.5, signed on base. A look at Murata's retrospective 2004 exhibition at the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art can be viewed at: e-yakimono.net/html/murata-gen-pt-2004.html
