Mashiko Jar by Murata Gen
Murata Gen(1904-1988) was one of the greatest Mingei potters of the 20th century. His pots have all that is good in mingei; he was awarded many prizes including that of the Tochigi Prefectural Culture Prize in 1985. By a stroke of luck I was able to acquire four pieces from a private collection. This jar shows the classic Mashiko persimmon-kaki glaze over which Murata ladled on nuka and iron glazes. In perfect condition with a signed box, 22.5cm.tallx20.5cm. signed on base.
