Bizen Platter by Kakurezaki Ryuichi
Kakurezaki Ryuichi (b.1950) is a ceramic artist whose name immediately conjures up images of revolutionary Bizen forms that can be labeled "Heisei Bizen" (the name of the present emperor), as opposed to "Momoyama Bizen" of the 16th century. He is a special and important artist, and his name cannot be ignored when listing contemporary Bizen greats. This Bizen platter is special (and quite rare), as it is made in a style called "nerikomi," a style that Kakurezaki rarely attempts. Nerikomi entails mixing Bizen clay with Bizen "yamazuchi" mountain clay. The term "shizen" means natural, thus Shizen Nerikomi refers to the natural mixing of clay to form this piece. The nerikomi technique results in rough textures that creates great wabi-sabi austere landscapes. Kakurezaki has covered the rough clay with a transparent glaze. The firing is again excellent, and the patches of fire red are well-balanced. It stands on two artistic 'feet' and is in perfect condition with a signed box, 6cm.tallx33.5x12, signed on base and dates to 2004.
