Hagi Vase by Miwa Eizo
The Miwa family has been potting in Hagi since Kanbun 3 (1663) when the first Kyusetsu (original name was Chubei Toshisada) opened a kiln under the watchful eye of the feudal lord of the area, Mohri Terumoto. The current Kyusetsu is the twelfth generation, formerly known as Ryosaku. His father is Jyusetsu and is in his 90s and still potting. Jyusetsu had three sons, all of whom are well-known Hagi potters the other two being Eizo(1946-1999) and Kazuhiko. They all make traditional Hagi wares as well as some very contemporary Hagi with a very artful soul. I had imagined that Eizo would have become the next Kyusetsu for his work is more in line with traditional Hagi than his two brothers. Yet, Eizo passed away in 1999 at the age of 52; it was a sad loss for Hagi. Here is a very strong vase from Eizo and one of his signature forms with a bold square facade accentuated by the cut lines at the base and of course the exposed clay areas. A museum piece in perfect condition with a signed box, 28cm.tallx14.5, stamped on base.
