Bizen Mizusashi by Moritoki Taiyu
Moritoki Taiyu(b.1920) is a master calligrapher as well as being a respected potter who specializes in Bizen(studied with Isezaki Yozan), yet also fired Shino and Karatsu. Here is a low and wide Moritoki Bizen mizusashi suited for summer or spring. The markings on the front and back are incised markings for decorative effect. It displays a rich firing on terms of the golden browns due to red pine fly ash, this 'landscape' in Bizen is called goma. This is particularly noticeable in photo two where it shows how the mizusashi was blessed with much goma on the front and how it stopped on the side; this is all due to the position of any given piece in the kiln and this mizusashi was given a prized spot. Another worthy firing point is the dark red-purples called 'tsuchi-aji' or 'clay flavor,' and as with the goma is very good indeed. Signed box, 13.5cm.tallx24, signed on base, custom-made lacquer lid, in excellent condition, a few tiny firing cracks where the ears were placed on the mizusashi.
