Square Tamba Yohen Vase by Nishihata Tadashi
Other than urban-stylish potter Ichino Masahiko, another great potter in Tamba is Nishihata Tadashi (b.1948), the son of veteran Tamba potter Nishihata Sueharu. Nishihata apprenticed to his father in 1969, and since has went on to win many awards, such as the Grand Prize at the Tanabe Museum's Tea Forms Exhibition('91), for example. He exhibits at many fine galleries, namely Mitsukoshi(where a jar is now on display at the 54th annual Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition), and is known for his great firing techniques and powerful kiln effects. One can see that here on this yohen rare square vase. The front has a roundel reminding one of the full moon, and each side has a dark, earthy feel; it was fired with the roundel face down and thus ash has melted on the back. The mouth is small and a tall straight up Ikebana display of autumn reeds or spring flowers will certainly look stunning. In perfect condition with a signed box, 20.5cm.tallx10.5, signed on base
