One of the best Mino potters in all of Japan is Yamada Kazu(b.1954). That's not a comment to be made lightly, but it is the truth. His Shino, Ki-Seto, Setoguro, Oribe are modern in their feel and design while using the age-old traditional clay, glazes, and firing methods; that's what makes pottery come alive in the first place here. Yamada was born in Tokoname but made his way to Fukui where he set up kiln in 1976. Kato Tokuro was an early fan of his. Ever striving to keep the form and glazing fresh and alive, Yamada created his own red-glazed Oribe style with the glazing dramatically ladled over the cream glazed etched form. All in all a very vibrant chawan right down to the very original kodai-foot. In perfect condition with a signed box,8.5cm.tallx12, signed on base. Once on a hot summer day in Tokyo, I was served tea in a cold Yamada chawan just like this--it was refreshing beyond words.
