Shigaraki Mizusashi by Sugimoto Sadamitsu
Sugimoto Sadamitsu(b.1935) has been a potter since 1968 and is revered here in Japan by Tea aficionados. A few months ago I took the Mishima branch of the Japan Ceramic Society to Shigaraki and all the Tea teachers and students wanted to visit Sugimoto; so we did. Sugimoto studied Tea utensils at Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto under the watchful eye of the late Zen master Tachibana Taiki. Sugimoto makes Shigaraki, Iga, kohiki, and Raku wares---more about Sugimoto can be read here: e-yakimono.net/html/sugimoto-sadamitsu.htm This rugged Shigaraki mizusashi shares a kindred spirit with the famous ripped and torn Iga Momoyama masterpiece Yaburebukuro; both possess the stunning results of an intense firing and cracked front. The blackened ash front is sided by glassy green ash glaze and some has pooled on the shoulder and also on the lid. The piece is a fine example of Sugimoto's coveted mizusashi and this one was shown at his 1989 Kobe exhibition that also celebrated the Sen no Rikyu 400th anniversary since passing from this world. That same year, the famed Tea scholar Hayashiya Seizo--now Tomoo Musee Museum director--selected Sugimoto's Tea wares to be used in the movie 'Rikyu.'
