Two Oribe Chawan by Ishii Takahiro
An apprentice takes on many roles in a traditional setting; of course he/she works very hard in the studio, yet they also do other tasks, such as picking up clients from the train station. When I used to go visit Kakurezaki Ryuichi in the early 90s I remember Ishii Takahiro as 'my driver' on a few occasions. Well, he has since graduated from his apprenticeship with Kakurezaki and established his own kiln just one year ago. He's yet to build a wood-burning kiln and now fires in a gas kiln, the same way Kakurezaki did for glazed wares. And Ishii has taken the 'Kakurezaki Way' for glazed wares and created his own forms based on his master's. We're very pleased to show nine chawan that were recently fired. Each is quite extraordinary for a young potter--Ishii is 30 and studied with Kakurezaki from 2000-2005--and all are basic chawan size, signed and with a signed box.
