'Bird' Tsubo-Jar by Fujihira Shin
One of Japan's most unique and prolific ceramic artists is Kyoto's Fujihira Shin(1922-2012). He has essayed some of the most charming, intriguing, and of 'another world' ceramic pieces during his long career. He's been honored with museum retrospective exhibitions at Musee Tomo in Tokyo and Paramita in Mie museums and issue no.76(2003) of Honoho Geijutsu was devoted to him. His honors and exhibitions are too long to list here, suffice to say he is a major, eclectic ceramic artist. More about him and also past exhibition slide shows can be viewed at e-yakimono.net This jar dates to the early 1970s and has one of Fujihira's favorite motifs--birds-- vigorously etched in the surface along with two human profiles on the side; it has the feel of an Ikeda Masuo print. The form is a traditional tsubo-jar with a white slip and yellow overglaze. A very rare piece in perfect condition with a signed box, 27.3cm.tallx25. A photo from the large 'Gendai no Togei Vol.14' book of 1977, Kodansha shows a similar work from 1970 and also photos of Fujihira from that time; photos courtesy of Kodansha Publishing. In that volume also featured are Suzuki Seisei, Kato Takuo, Kawamoto Taro, Nakazato Tarouemon, Ono Hakuko, Tsuji Kyo and Kato Kiyoyuki, among others.
