Mizusashi / Nakamura Takuo
Zogan Iro-e Mizusashi by Nakamura Takuo
Nakamura Takuo(b.1945) is a second generation Kanazawa ceramic artist and he creates opulent works reflecting the colorful culture of Kanazawa. He studied with his father Baizan starting in 1976 and then studied glazes at the Nagoya Industrial Technology Institute, and then traveled to Italy to study under Aldo Rontini. Nakamura then took over the family kiln and has been making distinctive works ever since. I wrote a Japan Times article on him in 1999 that will go into more detail on this important contemporary ceramic artist, it can be read at e-yakimono.net/html/nakamura-takuo-jt.html You might have to put www. in front of the URL. After many years of trying I was finally able to select a mizusashi and offer it here. It has Nakamura's rugged 'clay flavored' sculptural base with inlaid color design (zogan iro-e). A custom-made lacquer lid covers a third of the top and the inside is glazed. Nakamura's works have been shown in many museum exhibitions here in Japan including the 2000 Utsuwa-Vessels show at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. From that catalog, 'The vessel carved out with wire strongly asserts the unrefined qualities of fired clay. The contorted shape, produced by unwavering pride in the interior of the vessel, is at once a formative effect and a pleasant stimulant for the eye that probes its use. The inlay of overglaze porcelain applied to the red clay foundation brightens the piece, while retaining its classic tone.' In perfect condition with a signed box, 16cm.tallx3423.5x22, stamped on base.
