Fuki-Wind Vase by Ohira Kazumasa
Ohira Kazumasa(1943-) is an Iga-based ceramic artist who makes powerful forms 'for wind and water.' He studied sculpture at Musashino Art University and that background shows clearly on his work. Many ceramic artists in Japan also studied sculpture before turning to clay and one name that pops into mind is Mino's Kato Yasukage (some new works by him soon). Ohira is very interested in 'Environment Ceramic Art' and draws inspiration from stones, the hills, earth and water. Many of his larger installations do accommodate water not for the purpose of flowers or such, yet as an integral shimmering aspect of the form. This is a sculpted-cut vase from Ohira's Fuki or 'Wind Vessel' series; he took inspiration here from castle ruins/foundations. The tower form has a rough cut lip, while random ash-glaze drips accentuate and balance out the unglazed warm clay areas. In perfect condition with a signed box, 23cm.tall and 7.5-8.0cm.wide, signed on base.
