Incised Stoneware Vase by Yasuhara Kimei
One of Japan's most avant-garde ceramic artists of the 20th century was Yasuhara Kimei(Yoshiaki--1906-1980). His work is in the Tokyo National Museum of Art, Tokyo Art Museum, and many works in the Sogetsu Museum of Art. Yasuhara was based in Tokyo and he was a major contributor to Nitten throughout the years. His retrospective exhibition in 1993 was a major show and highlighted his extraordinary career---right up there with Noguchi, Yagi, and Picasso in terms of his originality in ceramics; a photo of the exhibition catalog and one page are also shown. Here is a fine incised vase that is classic Yasuhara--it dates from the 1970s. It has Yasuhara's signature lively incised lines and classical form with a squiggly 'necklace.' It is a rare piece in perfect condition, 24.cm.tall and 17.0cm.across, stamped on base, no box.
