Kato Shigetaka (1927-) is the third son of the late great Kato Tokuro, younger brother of the late great Okabe Mineo, and father of Takahiro. Shigetaka has had his own successful career winning the Japan Ceramic Society Prize and having a Shino work featured on the cover of the 'Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections' exhibition catalog published by the Japan Society, NY in 1993. Kato, believe it or not, had his first exhibition in Tokyo in 1988---he started in clay with his father in 1945 and assisted Tokuro as well as making his own works, including dozens of ceramic walls in buildings throughout Japan. This is a powerful Oribe squared jar that combines the beauty of emerald green glazing with a powerful sculptural facade, way before his time, dating to the early 1970s. The opening is a focal point of interest, small yet it certainly draws one in. In perfect condition with a signed box, 24.2cm.tallx14x12.5, signed on base, museum quality....
