Shigaraki Shizen-Yu Small Jar by Koyama Kiyoko
Koyama Kiyoko(b.1936) was born far from Shigaraki in Nagasaki prefecture; she came to Shigaraki when she was eighteen and then spent some time in Kyoto studying about Kenzan and sometsuke blue and white wares. At the age twenty-seven she decided to pursue Shigaraki and thus entered a very closed male world; her strong will pulled her through some very tough discriminating times and she has created some stunning Shigaraki works ever since. More about Koyama can be read in our archives. This is a classic shizen-yu natural ash-glazed jar that was fired for two weeks in Koyama's anagama. The overlapping flow of shizen-yu is rich, alive and some of the best from any Shigaraki ceramic artist. The back highlights the warm 'clay flavor' tsuchi-aji that Shigraki is also celebrated for, In perfect condition with a signed box, 18cm.tall and 17cm.wide, signed on base. A very sabi piece that is perfect for chabana.
