Kasama Tsubo-Jar by Uetake Satoshi
When one thinks of Kasama it's quite hard to find a representative style these days. In the past the town turned out utilitarian vessels like that of its not too distant neighbor Mashiko. These days though it's pretty much anything goes in both towns, with most ceramic art, especially in Kasama, being ornately decorated--think Wada Morihiro. One of Kasama's more balanced ceramic artists in terms of design is surely Uetake Satoshi. A piece of his is now traveling Japan in the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts exhibition, a very prestigious and hard-to-be accepted into exhibition, and organization. This small tsubo shows Uetake's sense of design and current color schemes; the dry crackled beige surface is accentuated by the flowing illusionary overlapping 'petals.' A very engaging piece in perfect condition with a signed box, 20cm.tallx21, stamped on base.
