Iga Uzukumaru by Tsujimura Kai
One classic shape of old jar form is called uzukumaru. It's a squat jar that has been favored by chajin for centuries to display 'simple' chabana arrangements in; of course before that they were used by farmers to process seeds, liquids, etc...Uzukumaru often have incised rope or cypress fence designs on the shoulder known as nawame or higaki. This strong example does not however, instead around the neck can be seen a firing effect called kabuse-yaki, meaning another piece--perhaps a chawan--was placed upside down over the neck and thus no ash fell on that portion--we see a pleasing 'clay flavor' rim. The firing on the body is exceptional, with classic scorch patches, emerald green bidoro glazing and quartz stone bursts. It was made by Tsujimura Kai. In perfect condition with a signed box, 18cm.tall and 24cm.wide, signed on side.
