Mashiko Henko-Jar by Sakuma Totaro
Sakuma Totaro (1900-1976) was a Mashiko potter of the highest order. He was Hamada Shoji's first true friend in Mashiko and more about Sakuma can be read in a Japan Times article I wrote some years back; go to e-yakimono.net and search for Sakuma. Here is one the finest henko of his I've ever seen, and that includes my many visits to the Japan Folk Craft Museum, Ohara Museum, Mashiko Ceramic Art Museum, and all the books in my extensive library. It has a classic persimmon glaze and roundels on each side with delicate swiftly drawn iron designs, plus Sakuma's celadon glaze as accents for which he is known for. The henko stands on four feet and is 24.5cm.tall and 12cm.wide, signed old box, and is in perfect condition. Another museum quality piece not often seen.
