Hagi Tokkuri by Miwa Kyusetsu X (Kyuwa)
Miwa Kyusetsu X (1895-1981), later known as Kyuwa, was the first Living National Treasure of Hagi -the second was his younger brother Miwa Kyusetsu XI (Jusetsu). Quite simply, he did what LNT Kaneshige Toyo did for Bizen, or what LNT Nakazato Muan did for Karatsu. He is a legendary figure, and reinvigorated Hagi with elegant and contemplative Hagi teawares. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1970, the same year as Fujiwara Kei. Here is rare–first we’ve ever had–Miwa tokkuri that exemplifies the serene, subtle, and deeply contemplative nature of Kyusetsu’s work. The white Hagi creamy glaze also yohen speckled violet tones on the front; also the throwing is sublime with the shoulder rising to a slightly rippling neck, a Kyusetsu X trademark. This work was made before Kyusetsu changed his name to Kyuwa sometime in the late 1950s-early 1960s. It’s 16cm tall, comes with a signed box, stamped on base, in perfect condition.
