Shinsha Chawan by Kawai Kanjiro
One of Japan’s greatest ceramic artists in all of history, Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966). It’s mind-boggling that he’s not as well known in the West as Hamada. Anyway, here is a classic slip-trail design shinsha-copper red bold chawan in perfect condition, 10.2cm.cm.tallx12.3, box signed by Kawai’s daughter Koha. A similar chawan is shown in a catalog commemorating the Kawai House’s 40th Anniversary since becoming a ‘museum.’ If you’ve never been to Kawai’s house, which now is a shrine to his life and a must visit if ever in Kyoto, then here’s a nice walk through video showing the property: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=833-DU6wXLA We also have a Kawai yunomi–please contact for more details–and the three jars in the additional photo.
