Yakishime Ceramic Sculpture by Kato Katsuya
Kato Katsuya(b.1947) was born into an ancient potting family in the town in Nishio, not far from one of Japan’s most important potting centers from long ago, Seto in Aichi prefecture. His specialty is yakishime–high fired unglazed stoneware–and since 2005 has been firing an anagama in the mountains of Shimoyama, Aichi prefecture. He fires for six days. His works are quite architectural and here’s the largest that RYYG selected from his recent visit. It stands 39.cm.tallx25.7cm. wide x 18cm.deep. He’s been given the Aichi Governor’s Prize at the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition and has exhibited throughout Japan, he’s not known in the West, yet. We have smaller works as noted as well as tokkuri and guinomi.
