Very Rare Mingei Octagonal Jar by Takeuchi Seijiro
Takeuchi Seijiro (1921-1979) was a Mingei potter based in Kurashiki, Okayama prefecture who had a deep connection with the Mingei Movement and all its main leaders in all genres as well as the beautiful Ohara Museum also in Kurashiki. He worked at regional mingei style kilns first gaining recognition and then established his own kiln in Kurashiki in 1960. One of the B&W photo seen here shows Hamada Shoji and Ohara Soichiro at Takeuchi’s first kiln unloading. This is the second or third Takeuchi piece we’ve ever had and it’s also important in that it comes directly from the Ohara Family Collection; on the underside of the lid on the right side is the Ohara family stamp, the left side is Takeuchi’s name and stamp. The solid octagonal jar has raised slip-trails relief designs under the warm/creamy nuka glaze, the inside reveals a kaki-persimmon glaze. In perfect condition–one small insignificant superficial firing crack on the base(unseen when standing), signed box, 20cm.tallx24-25.cm. Exhibition number seal still on base. His works are in the collections of the Ohara Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
