Kohiki Chawan by Arakawa Toyozo
One of the most gifted potters and scholars Japan has ever known was Arakawa Toyozo(1894-1985). He was named a Living National Treasure in 1955 for Shino and Black Seto. He also was associated with some of the other greatest potters of his day including Miwa Kyusetsu, Kawakita Handeshi, Kato Hajime, Kato Tokuro, Ishiguro Munemaro, and Kaneshige Toyo. Here is a circa 1955 kohiki chawan fired at the Suigetsu kiln; it has a bold feel in the hands that is always found in any of Arakawa’s chawan. One can see exactly where he held it while applying the white slip. In perfect condition with a signed inner box and an outer black lacquer box, signed on base, 9.6cm.tallx12-13cm.
